Netherlands is well known for its sailing history – the truth is, Netherlands used to rule the world seas. A new thing that comes more and more popular among sailors who want to spend their time sailing in the Netherlands are houseboats. More comfortable, perfect for sailing through canals of Frisian lakes or in Amsterdam.

The Netherlands have a temperate, maritime climate, highly influenced by the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean, with cool summers and moderate winters. Daytime temperatures varies from 2°C-6°C in the winter and 17°C-20°C in the summer. Although country is small and there are only little variations in climate from region to region, influence of North Sea and Atlantic Ocean is less inland. Rainfall is distributed throughout the year with a dryer period from June to September.
The wind, apart from cool, cloudy and humid climate, is another characteristic for Dutch weather. Wind blows frequently, especially in autumn and winter period. The best time to visit Netherlands is from mid-May to mid-September. In this period, the temperature is usually mild or pleasantly warm, even though rains are quite frequent.
⛵ Top sailing destinations in the Netherlands
Enkhuizen is one of the most beautiful Dutch harbor towns on the IJsselmeer (IJssel Lake) with its rich history and its glory time in the 17th century. Now – an important tourist center, pleasant water sports location with various yacht harbors and a marina. You will find here many cozy streets, terraces and a few interesting museums. Lemmer is an old, beautiful and pretty busy town. Nowadays it’s one of the biggest centers for water sports on the IJsselmeer and it’s very popular with sailors. A wide beach very close to the town center hosts the Glemmer Beach Festival in summer. One of the landmarks in Lemmer is the old Woudagemaal – the biggest functioning (!) steam pumping station in the world. Harlingen is the most important harbor of Friesland often called „The gate to the Wadden Sea“. Some of the town’s old fortification works have survived the test of time, just as the town canals and historical warehouses and mansions. You will discover nice old lanes, bridges and houses while strolling through the old town center. Volendam is a cozy old fishers village, founded in the 15th century. Some people say it’s the gem of the Zuiderzee (Southern Sea). A popular destination for tourists, it has its special charm and it’s known in the whole world for its unique traditional costumes.

The Netherlands has 5 main airports: Amsterdam Airport Schiphol; Eindhoven Airport; Rotterdam The Hague Airport; Maastricht Aachen Airport and Groningen Airport. Amsterdam airport is the biggest and busiest airport (fifth-most trafficked in Europe) and has fly connections with most of the European capital cities.
The most convenient means of transportation from Amsterdam to Therherne is by train which costs 26-52€ and takes around 3h 15min. The most convenient means of transportation from Amsterdam to Drachten is by bus which costs 11-14€ and takes around 2h 25min. The most convenient means of transportation from Amsterdam to Lemmer is by train which costs 26-51€ and takes around 2h 33min. The most convenient means of transportation from Amsterdam to Heukelum is by train which costs 24-51€ and takes around 1h 55min.
The official language of the Netherlands is Dutch, but you will have no problem communicating in English
An ideal period of the year for a sailing trip is during summer between May/June and September
In the Netherlands, the power plugs and sockets are of type C and F
Credit cards are not popular in the Netherlands and unless you have Maestro debit card, you might have a problem in smaller stores
Tipping is not required but it is nice to tip 10% if you feel the service is good
