Casa Batllo is an iconic work by the famous architect Antoni Gaudi. Originally built for the middle-class Batllo family yet through Gaudi’s imagination, the colorful mosaic mansion is redesigned to look more like the physical appearance of a mythical creature, making it one of the most impressive modernist landmarks of Spain.
Many locals refer to Casa Batllo as casa dels ossos (house of bones) or case del drac (house of the dragon) for its unique architecture. From outside, its balconies look like the jaws of a magnificent creature and its roof was built to look like the shape of the animal’s back, with “spine” changes color when viewed from different angles. The facade, with its numerous shades of blue, purple, and greens, is divided into three separate sections, each resembles a level of anatomy. So the base level is designed as if it is gridded by huge abstract bones, while the front takes on an abstract pattern of blood vessels and muscle, and then everything is covered by a scaly roof section that resembles the back of a dragon.
With such original, one-of-a-kind design, Casa Batllo is now open as a museum for visitors and architects to experience its unique features. From June till October every year, the mansion also holds a wide variety of musical shows, from blues, rock, soul to jazz, pop, and flamenco, offering arguably the most intimate and aesthetically pleasing music experience in Spain.
