Yacht Charter Finland
Finland is a country of water as much as land - a Baltic coastline broken into tens of thousands of islands, plus the vast Saimaa lake system inland. Chartering here means threading the low granite islets of the Turku Archipelago or cruising the calm lakes by houseboat, with the boat serving as both transport and base, whether for a short summer trip or a longer archipelago tour.
Why Charter in Finland
The appeal is two very different waters in one country: the sheltered Turku Archipelago and Gulf of Finland on the Baltic side, and the Saimaa lakes, Europe's largest lake district, inland. Boataround lists boats across both - canal boats and houseboats on the lakes, sailing yachts and motor boats in the archipelago - and shows a total price with no hidden fees. Notably, 25 of the listed boats need no licence at all.
When to Go
The season is short and concentrated in summer, roughly June to August, when the long Nordic daylight keeps the water usable late into the evening and Midsummer marks the peak. Spring and the September shoulder are quieter and, for some boats, cheaper. Ice closes both the archipelago and the lakes in winter, so there is effectively no off-season charter.
Charter Options: Skippered, Bareboat and No Licence
The fleet splits fairly evenly between bareboat and skippered charters - 18 bareboat and 16 skippered among the listings - but the striking figure is that 25 boats need no licence at all, more than in most countries. That reflects the many small motor boats and lake houseboats, which are straightforward to handle; larger sailing yachts in the archipelago more often go bareboat with a recognised licence or out with a skipper.
Types of Boats in Finland
Canal boats and houseboats are the largest group, based on the Saimaa lakes and built for slow, self-catered cruising. Sailing yachts, around seven listed, suit the Turku Archipelago's sheltered channels, while motor boats and a few motor yachts handle short hops and fishing. A couple of catamarans round out the fleet. Many of the smaller boats need no licence, which makes Finland an easy place for a first self-drive trip.
Where to Sail in Finland
The Turku Archipelago in the southwest is the classic saltwater cruising ground, thousands of low islands with short passages between guest harbours. The Gulf of Finland and the waters off Uusimaa put Helsinki within reach. Inland, the Saimaa lake system in South Savo is houseboat country - a maze of connected lakes and channels - and boats also list around Päijät-Häme and, further north, Lapland.
What It Costs to Charter a Yacht in Finland
Prices barely moved between the early-August peak and the late-September shoulder, and the cheapest boat was often the very same listing in both weeks: a canal boat held flat at about €2,976 for a week (Saturday to Saturday), the same Saimaa houseboat with the same 20% discount both times. a sailing yacht was the exception, easing from about €3,600 to about €3,000 - the same Hanse 400 both times, simply listed lower for September. a motor yacht also held flat, at about €903, the same small motor boat in both weeks with no discount. With a small fleet and few operators per category, the cheapest available boat tends to carry across both weeks, so the short Finnish summer shows up more in availability than in price.
