Yacht charter in Montenegro

Montenegro packs two very different sailing areas into a short stretch of Adriatic coast. The Bay of Kotor, often called Boka, is an enclosed, fjord-like bay with calm water and mountains rising straight from the shore, while the open coast from Budva down to Bar offers long beaches and proper open-sea sailing. Most charter bases sit inside the bay, in Tivat, Kotor and Herceg Novi.

Unlike in neighbouring Albania, both bareboat and skippered charters are well established here. The fleet on Boataround currently includes sailing yachts, catamarans, motorboats and motor yachts in similar numbers, plus a couple of crewed gulets, so the country works both for licensed sailors who want their own boat and for guests who prefer a skipper or full crew.

What It Costs to charter a yacht in Montenegro

Price varies more by boat type than by season here. A catamaran for a week (Saturday to Saturday) costs about €3,437 in the quieter September shoulder season, rising to about €4,949 in peak season (July-August). A gulet, the traditional crewed sailing vessel, runs from about €11,500 up to €12,900 across the same window - though only two gulets operate here, so this reflects a couple of specific boats rather than a broad trend. A sailing yacht, a motorboat, and a motor yacht showed no price difference between the two periods checked, holding steady at about €1,920, €1,440, and €3,600 respectively.

Do you need a licence to charter a boat in Montenegro?

For a bareboat charter, yes. Montenegrin authorities and charter companies expect a recognised skipper qualification such as the International Certificate of Competence (ICC), an RYA Day Skipper certificate or a national equivalent, and many operators also ask for a VHF radio licence. Bring the original documents to check-in.

If you book a skippered boat or a crewed yacht, no licence or experience is needed. The skipper handles berthing, harbour formalities and the local rules, which also makes a skippered charter the easy option for a first visit to the Boka.

Best sailing areas in Montenegro

Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska)

The inner bay around Kotor and Perast is the signature experience of the country: a UNESCO-listed landscape where medieval towns sit under steep mountains and the water stays flat in almost any weather. Sailing past the artificial islet of Our Lady of the Rocks off Perast and through the narrow Verige strait is a standard part of any route, and the boats available in Kotor depart from a quay right next to the old town.

Tivat and the central bay

Tivat is the most practical base in the country. Porto Montenegro, the largest marina, has full services and berths for everything up to superyachts, Marina Solila lies just around the corner, and Tivat airport is only about 4 km away, so transfers take minutes rather than hours. Browse the current yacht charter offer in Tivat.

Herceg Novi and the bay entrance

Herceg Novi guards the entrance to the Boka and is the closest base to Croatia, with Dubrovnik airport roughly 40 km away across the border. Boats here run from the modern Portonovi Marina in Kumbor and from Marina Lazure, and the nearby port of Zelenika is one of the country's official ports of entry; see the options for boat rental in Herceg Novi.

Budva, Bar and the open coast

Outside the bay the character changes: open Adriatic water, long sandy beaches and the walled old town of Budva with the islet of Sveti Stefan just down the coast. Wind and waves build up faster here than inside the sheltered Boka, which makes the stretch more interesting for sailors and less suitable for small day boats in unsettled weather. Boataround lists boats in Budva and a smaller selection for yacht charter in Bar, Montenegro's southernmost port.

Best time to sail in Montenegro

Season and weather

The charter season runs from May to October, with the most reliable conditions between June and September. Midsummer brings air temperatures around 25–30 °C and warm sea; June and September are slightly cooler, cheaper and noticeably quieter, while spring and autumn carry a higher chance of rain.

Winds and sailing conditions

The typical summer wind is the maestral, a north-westerly afternoon breeze of roughly 10–25 knots that fades towards evening. Two other Adriatic winds are worth knowing: the bura, a cold north-easterly that can arrive suddenly with strong gusts, mainly outside high summer, and the jugo, a humid southerly that brings rain and swell on the open coast. Inside the Bay of Kotor the water stays calm in almost any conditions, which is why the bay suits beginners and motorboat day trips, while the coast towards Budva and Bar gives experienced sailors more real wind.

Where to start your yacht charter in Montenegro

Tivat is the default choice: the airport is a few minutes from the marinas, and from Porto Montenegro or Marina Solila you can reach any point of the bay within a couple of hours on the water. Kotor works well if you want to stay next to the old town, and Herceg Novi is convenient if you fly into Dubrovnik.

Podgorica airport, about 44 km from Tivat, is the usual alternative when Tivat flights are full. Budva and Bar make sense as starting points if your plan focuses on the open coast rather than the bay.

What type of boat should you charter?

Sailing yachts and catamarans make up roughly half of the Montenegrin fleet and are the natural choice for a week-long itinerary combining the Boka with the open coast; licensed skippers can take them bareboat, and most are also offered with a skipper. Compare the current sailing yacht charter offer in Montenegro and the catamarans available in Montenegro, which add cabin space and stability for families.

Motorboats are the most popular format for day trips inside the bay, where distances are short and the water is flat. Larger crewed vessels dominate the luxury end; browse the motor yacht charter offer in Montenegro if you want speed and comfort for the whole coast.

Practical tips for sailing in Montenegro

Montenegro is not in the EU or the Schengen area, so bring your passport even when arriving from Croatia. Yachts entering the country by sea clear in at an official port of entry such as Zelenika, Kotor, Tivat or Bar, and the same applies when you leave for Croatia or Albania, so plan cross-border legs around clearance and confirm in advance that your charter company allows them.

Foreign-flagged boats cruising Montenegrin waters need a vignette, a cruising permit issued by the harbour master, and a small tourist tax applies per person. On locally based charter boats these formalities are normally dealt with by the operator, but ask when booking so there are no surprises at check-in.

Marina infrastructure is good for such a small country, led by Porto Montenegro in Tivat and Portonovi near Herceg Novi, and distances are short: nowhere in the bay is more than a few hours from a berth. For July and August, book months ahead, particularly for catamarans; in June and September the choice is far wider and the sea is still warm.
