Boat Hire Apulia & Yacht Charter
Apulia is the heel of Italy, with 800 km of coast split between two seas. The Adriatic side runs from the Gargano promontory past Bari and Brindisi down to Otranto; the Ionian side curves from Leuca through Gallipoli to Taranto. The fleet is unusually big and unusually easy to get into: 94 of the listed boats need no licence at all, and prices start lower than almost anywhere else in Italy.
Picking Your Base in Apulia
The two coasts sail nothing alike, and the base you choose decides which one you get.
Gargano: Vieste, Rodi Garganico and Manfredonia - the spur in the north, with limestone cliffs, sea caves and the Tremiti Islands offshore. The most dramatic coast in the region and the one people come back for.
Central Adriatic: Bari, Molfetta, Bisceglie and Brindisi - working ports with full services, good transport links and easy access to the cliffs at Polignano a Mare just south of Bari.
Eastern Salento: Castro di Lecce and Torre Vado - the rocky heel, clear water over rock, and the closest bases to Otranto and the tip at Santa Maria di Leuca.
Ionian side: Gallipoli, Porto Cesareo, Leuca and Taranto - shallower, sandier and calmer, with warmer Ionian water and the best beaches for a family week.
What Sort of Boat Suits Apulia
The mix leans heavily to small boats: about 73 motorboats, 15 sailing boats, 14 motor yachts, 11 catamarans and one power catamaran. With 94 listings needing no licence and 73 available bareboat, this is one of the easiest regions in Italy to take a boat out yourself.
Motorboats dominate and define the region: small open day boats for the caves at Vieste, the coves around Polignano and the Ionian beaches. Most licence-free boats are here.
Sailing boats suit a week along either coast, with a dependable afternoon breeze and short hops between harbours.
Catamarans are the family choice for the Tremiti crossing and for Ionian anchorages where you want space and shallow draft.
Motor yachts cover the longer coastal runs, including Gargano to the Tremiti and back inside a weekend.
Routes and Anchorages
Gargano and the Tremiti Islands - the sea caves between Vieste and Peschici are the region's signature, and the Tremiti group lies about 22 nautical miles offshore from Rodi Garganico. It is a marine protected area, so check the anchoring rules before you go.
Polignano a Mare and the central coast - the cliffs and the town built above them look their best from the water, an easy day out from Bari or Monopoli.
Otranto and the heel - the eastern tip is exposed and the water is clear over rock. Round Santa Maria di Leuca in settled weather and you swap the Adriatic for the Ionian in one passage.
Ionian coast and Porto Cesareo - shallow, sandy and sheltered, with the small islands off Porto Cesareo and the long beaches south of Gallipoli.
Licences, Skippers and Safety
Of the boats listed, 73 are available bareboat, 72 come with a skipper and 94 need no licence at all - the largest licence-free fleet of any Italian coastal region on Boataround. In Italy the requirement depends on engine power and distance from shore, and each listing states what applies.
The two coasts carry different risks. The Adriatic side is exposed to the northerly bora and the tramontana, which can build short, steep seas quickly and leave the Gargano cliffs as a lee shore with nowhere to hide. The Ionian side is generally calmer but shallower, and the sandbanks off Porto Cesareo need care. Either way, the Tremiti crossing is open water: check the forecast and go early.
Weather and When to Go
The season runs May to October, and Apulia holds its warmth later than the north - September is still full summer here. July and August are hottest and busiest, with the Salento coast at its most crowded and prices at their peak.
June and September are the value weeks: warm water, services running and room in the harbours. Spring brings more wind and cooler water but empty coast. Winter hire is limited to the odd day boat, and the Tremiti crossing becomes a weather-window job.
What Boat Hire in Apulia Costs
Prices start at about €100 per day, among the lowest entry points in Italy, and that figure is the motorboat average - a five-person Blu and Blu Sharko 19 lists at roughly €190. Sailing boats average around €184 per day, though the most-booked ten-berth boat costs about €620.
Motor yachts start near €429 per day and run to about €1,200 for a ten-person Astinor 36. The practical read: a licence-free motorboat at roughly €100 to €190 a day covers the caves and the beaches, while a sailing boat or catamaran only makes sense if you plan to sleep aboard and cover both coasts.
Book Apulia Boat Hire with Boataround
Boataround lists motorboats, sailing boats, catamarans and motor yachts from Vieste, Rodi Garganico and Manfredonia on the Gargano, through Bari, Molfetta, Bisceglie and Brindisi, down to Castro di Lecce, Torre Vado and Leuca, and across to Gallipoli, Porto Cesareo and Taranto on the Ionian, with full specifications, reviews from past hirers and secure payment. Check whether a listing needs a licence, add a skipper for the Tremiti crossing, and pick the coast that matches the week you want.
