Why Charter in Portugal

When to Go

• May to October: the main sailing season on the Atlantic coast, with June to September the most stable stretch and warm, sunny weather in the Algarve and around Lisbon.
• Summer afternoons bring the nortada, a reliable northerly wind that picks up through the day and is one of the defining features of Portuguese sailing.
• November to March: the Atlantic swell increases and many marinas and charter companies scale back operations, making this stretch better suited to experienced offshore sailors than to a first charter.

Charter Options: Skippered, Bareboat and No Licence

Nearly every boat in the Portuguese fleet on Boataround can be chartered with a skipper, and around a quarter is also available for bareboat charter. Portuguese law requires a boat licence for recreational craft over 5 metres or 4.5kW of engine power; smaller craft used by day within a harbour are exempt, which is why a large share of the fleet's motorboats can be rented with no licence at all. For anything above that threshold, EU-issued licences are automatically recognised, and an International Certificate of Competence, while not formally adopted under international resolution here, is generally accepted by charter companies - worth confirming directly before booking.

What It Costs to charter a yacht in Portugal

Prices for three of the five boat types checked did not change between the peak week (Saturday to Saturday, in August) and the shoulder week checked in September: sailing yacht came to about €2,000 in both weeks, motorboat to about €1,486, and motor yacht to about €4,800 - the same boat was the cheapest listing each time. power catamaran fell slightly, from about €7,140 in August to about €5,880 in September, again the same boat both times but discounted from a lower list price. catamaran was the exception: about €3,000 in August, when the cheapest listing carried a one-off 75% discount, rising to about €4,845 in September once that discount was no longer available and a different boat took the top spot. With a small number of operators per category, spread across the mainland, Azores and Madeira, the cheapest available boat in a given week reflects which operator has room and which discounts are running more than a clear high and low season.
