Yacht Charter Brazil
Two out of three charter boats Boataround lists for Brazil sit in a single state, Rio de Janeiro, and most of them are motor yachts rather than sailboats. That concentration says less about the rest of Brazil's 7,491 km of coastline than about where the charter industry has actually taken root: a handful of sheltered bays near Rio and São Paulo, not the whole country.
The Bay With 365 Islands
Angra dos Reis, about 150 km southwest of Rio, opens onto a bay dotted with 365 islands - one for each day of the year, as the story goes, though nobody seems to have counted them all in one sitting. Ilha Grande is the largest, with beaches reachable only by boat or on foot, and the bay's calm, island-broken water is why this stretch draws more charter traffic than almost anywhere else in the country. Paraty, an old colonial port a little further down the coast, is the other common stop on the same route.
São Paulo's Island of Sailors
Off the São Paulo coast, Ilhabela splits into two different stretches of water: sheltered and calm on the side facing the mainland, open and rougher on the ocean side. Local sailors have called it Brazil's sailing capital for long enough that the label has stuck - the island has more yacht clubs and regattas than most of the rest of the country combined.
Santa Catarina, Further South and Cooler
Santa Catarina, well south of Rio, carries a smaller share of the fleet but a genuinely different climate - the water here runs noticeably cooler than the tropical bays further north. Florianópolis alone counts more than a dozen marinas, evidence of a boating culture built more around local sailors than international charter traffic.
No Hurricane Season, but a Licence Question
Brazil's charter coast sits outside the Atlantic hurricane belt entirely - only one true hurricane, Catarina in 2004, has ever been recorded in the South Atlantic - which makes the dry season from April to November the more relevant planning point than any storm calendar. Foreign visitors without a recognised sailing qualification can sit a short practical and theory test through the rental company for a temporary licence valid 45 days; renting a sailing yacht without any licence at all usually means booking it with a skipper included.
What It Costs to Charter a Yacht in Brazil
Prices for the five boat types checked didn't move in one direction between the dry season and the Brazilian summer that follows it: a sailing yacht cost about €2,088 for a week (Saturday to Saturday) in early August against about €1,551 in mid-January - cheaper in January, and a different boat each time. a catamaran moved the other way, from about €6,650 in August to about €7,600 in January, the same boat both times, listed higher for the summer week. a power catamaran did the same, from about €8,183 to about €12,274, again the same boat, undiscounted both times. a motorboat and a motor yacht didn't move at all, holding at about €1,942 and €2,160, the same boat and no discount either month. The two categories that rose in January - both multihulls - suggest demand for Rio's bigger boats tracks Brazil's summer holidays more closely than the dry-season calendar usually recommended for sailing here.
