Yacht Charter and Boat Rental Croatia
Croatia has over a thousand islands along its Adriatic coast, with short distances between them and plenty of sheltered anchorages. That suits experienced sailors and first-timers alike. A Croatia yacht rental lets you sail from one island to the next in a few hours, anchor in a quiet bay, and walk into a town like Hvar or Korčula the same evening.
Why sail in Croatia
The Adriatic is calm by sea standards. The tidal range is only about 30–60 cm, and summer winds like the maestral are steady without being extreme. The season runs from May to mid-October.
Distances are short, so you can change your route as you go. You're rarely more than a few hours from the next harbour.
The coast also has the infrastructure for it. There are over 50 marinas, 22 of them run by ACI, most with water, electricity and fuel. Many sit next to old-town centres, so you step off the boat straight into a town. On quieter islands you'll use town quays or mooring buoys instead.
For sightseeing between sails: Diocletian's Palace in Split, the Roman arena in Pula, the walls of Dubrovnik, and Venetian-era towns on Hvar and Korčula.
When to go
- May and June: warm, fewer boats, steady wind, lower charter rates.
- July and August: warmest sea, busiest ports, highest marina and charter prices. Book early.
- September and October: sea still warm, fewer crowds. Higher chance of strong wind (the bura from the northeast, the jugo from the south), usually short-lived and well forecast.
Severe storms outside winter are rare. Check the marine forecast daily and you'll mostly get sun and light wind.
Charter options: bareboat, skippered, crewed
Bareboat charter Croatia. You captain the boat yourself. Croatian law requires at least one person aboard to hold a sailing licence and a VHF operator certificate. Full control over route and pace. With the right experience, a bareboat charter Croatia catamaran gives you more space.
Skippered charter Croatia. A professional skipper handles navigation and the boat. Good for crews without a licence, families, or anyone who wants to switch off. The skipper knows the routes and anchorages, needs a berth aboard, and the fee is extra. You can filter for skippered sailing holidays Croatia on Boataround.
Crewed charter Croatia. Skipper plus hostess, cook or deckhands. This is the luxury yacht charter Croatia route, and the usual setup for a gulet cruise Croatia. The crew sails, cooks and runs the trip. Highest price, least effort.
Types of yacht in Croatia
Sailing yacht charter Croatia (monohulls)
From roughly 30-foot two-cabin boats to 50-foot yachts with four or five cabins. Common brands: Beneteau, Jeanneau, Bavaria, Dufour. They sail better upwind than catamarans and fit 4 to 10 people. The choice if you actually want to sail. Available bareboat or with a skipper.
Catamaran charter Croatia
Two hulls, no heeling, shallow draft, and far more deck and cabin space. Brands like Lagoon, Bali and Leopard. Usually 4 to 6 cabins for 8 to 12 people, which splits the cost across a group. The shallow draft lets you anchor closer to beaches. More expensive than a monohull. A catamaran rental Croatia works well crewed, or bareboat with enough experience.
Motor yacht charter Croatia
Engine instead of sails, so you cover ground fast. You could leave Split in the morning and reach Dubrovnik by evening, a trip that takes days under sail. Sizes run from small day boats to 20-metre-plus yachts with crew. More fuel cost, less sailing. Good if you're short on time.
Gulet cruises Croatia
Large wooden motor-sailers, usually crewed and booked by the week. Typically 5 to 8 cabins for 10 to 16 guests, with plenty of deck space. They mostly motor between bays and anchor each day. Closer to a small cruise than a sailing trip.
Where to sail in Croatia
Istria and Kvarner (north)
An Istria yacht charter usually starts from Pula, next to the Roman amphitheatre. From there you can reach Brijuni National Park (14 islands) and the old towns of Rovinj and Vrsar. Kvarner Bay holds Cres, Krk, Rab, Lošinj and Pag. Distances are longer than in central Dalmatia, wind can be stronger early and late in the season, and there are fewer sheltered anchorages.
Yacht charter Zadar (northern Dalmatia)
A yacht charter Zadar reaches two protected areas at sea: Kornati National Park and Telašćica Nature Park on Dugi Otok. Krka National Park is reachable up the river to Skradin. The Zadar archipelago includes Ugljan, Pašman, Silba, Molat and Ist, most with sheltered bays or fishing villages. Sakarun Bay on Dugi Otok has turquoise water and a sand beach. Marinas in Biograd, Zadar and Skradin handle resupply. See Boataround's Croatia sailing trips 7 days itinerary around Zadar.
Yacht charter Split and Trogir (central Dalmatia)
The busiest charter region. A yacht charter Split starts from the ACI marina, Kaštela or nearby Trogir, which sits 30 minutes from the airport and makes a Trogir yacht charter a convenient launch point. Within a week you can reach Hvar, Brač, Vis, Šolta and the Pakleni Islands.
- Hvar: the sunniest island, with Hvar Town's nightlife and quieter Stari Grad and Jelsa.
- Brač: Zlatni Rat beach, the pebble spit that shifts shape with the wind.
- Vis: a military base until the 1990s, so less developed; the Blue Cave is on nearby Biševo.
Legs between islands are longer than up north. Local wines: Plavac Mali on Hvar and Vis. Food: peka and fresh seafood.
Yacht charter Dubrovnik (southern Dalmatia)
A Dubrovnik yacht charter pairs the walled city with the quietest sailing in the country. The region is further from Split, so it sees fewer boats. Main stops: Mljet (a national park with two saltwater lakes), Lastovo (a remote nature park with very dark skies for stargazing), Korčula (a walled town, said to be Marco Polo's birthplace, with Grk and Pošip white wines), and the Elaphiti Islands (Šipan, Lopud, Koločep). More open water between islands. ACI Marina Dubrovnik has the highest fees in Croatia, over €100 a night for a mid-sized yacht in peak season.
What It Costs to charter a yacht in Croatia
Price drops noticeably in the shoulder season across most boat types. A sailing yacht for a week (Saturday to Saturday) costs about €770 in the September shoulder season, rising to about €1,028 in peak season (July-August). A catamaran runs from about €1,988 up to €2,888, a motor yacht from about €1,111 up to €2,160, a power catamaran from about €4,275 up to €5,760, and a gulet, Croatia's crewed traditional sailing vessel, from about €6,480 up to €7,407 across the same window. A motorboat was the one exception, holding steady at about €432 in both periods checked.

FAQs
Why is Croatia such a popular destination for a sailing holiday?
Croatia is considered a "sailor's paradise" because it offers a combination of over a thousand islands, calm seas with small tides, and steady summer winds. The short distances between islands and the excellent marina infrastructure make it easy and stress-free to explore.
What's the difference between a bareboat and a skippered charter?
A bareboat charter is where you captain the yacht yourself, which requires you to have a valid sailing license and VHF certificate. A skippered charter includes a professional captain who handles all navigation and sailing, making it a stress-free option for those without a license or who simply want to relax.
Do I need a license to rent a bareboat yacht in Croatia?
Yes. Croatian law requires at least one person on board to have a valid, internationally recognized sailing license and a separate VHF radio operator certificate.
What are the main sailing regions in Croatia?
Croatia's coast is typically divided into three main charter regions:
-
Split and Trogir (Central Dalmatia): The most popular hub, providing access to famous islands like Hvar, Brač, and Vis.
-
Zadar (North Dalmatia): The best starting point for visiting the stunning Kornati National Park and Telašćica.
-
Dubrovnik (South Dalmatia): Ideal for exploring Mljet National Park, Korčula, and the Elaphiti Islands.
What are some "must-visit" islands or national parks?
Key highlights include Hvar (known for its nightlife and the Pakleni Islands), Vis (and the nearby Blue Cave), Korčula (a historic walled town), and the beautiful Kornati National Park, which is an archipelago of over 80 islands.
Do I need a licence to rent a boat in Croatia?
For bareboat charters in Croatia, the skipper must hold a licence recognised by the Croatian Ministry of the Sea and a VHF radio certificate. The ICC, many RYA tickets and their national coastal equivalents licences are accepted; you can online.
If you lack the paperwork, simply add a professional skipper when booking.
What weather and wind conditions should I expect in Croatia?
Summer brings predictable afternoon maestral breezes (NW 10-18 kn). The bura (NE) and jugo (SE) are stronger, occasional systems—check forecasts and plan shorter hops if they’re predicted.
Is it easy to find places to dock overnight? Yes.
Croatia has outstanding maritime infrastructure, including over 50 well-equipped marinas (like the ACI network) that offer water, electricity, and services. You can also find numerous town quays and secure mooring buoys in thousands of sheltered bays.
Can I hire a skipper or crew in Croatia?
Yes. Professional skippers cost around €200-€250 per day plus provisioning and their cabin; a chef or hostess can be added for crewed charters or larger gulets. Travelers who hired a skipper found the flexibility and local knowledge outweighed the extra cost.
Are there anchoring restrictions or park permits in Croatia?
Anchoring is unrestricted outside marked swimming areas, ferry lanes and concessions. In national parks such as the Kornati Islands or Mljet, pick-up buoys are compulsory and charged on arrival; fees vary by boat length.
