When is the best time for a boating holiday?
June to August brings long daylight and open seasonal services. The water stays cool. Cross exposed stretches only with a suitable forecast. May and September work for flexible crews. Check base opening dates, services and daylight hours before you plan the route.
Where can a less experienced crew begin?
Start with short day trips around Saverne / Hesse in weather your crew can handle. Pick a nearby harbour as a fallback and get to know the boat before a longer crossing. Book a skippered charter if nobody in your crew has experience with navigation or berthing.
What type of boat should I choose?
Choose the houseboat or canal cruiser by the waterway you plan to cruise and the space you need on board. Compare cabins, heating, deck access, water capacity and fuel terms. Draught, air draught, beam and length decide which bridges, locks and moorings the boat can use. A larger or more powerful boat may need a different licence and may have a smaller permitted area.
How should I plan the journey to the marina?
Choose the marina first, then compare flights and road transfers via Strasbourg (SXB) / Saverne / Hesse. Check the full journey to the marina and leave time for shopping and the boat handover. If you arrive late, arrange the pick-up in advance and book a room ashore if the charter company does not offer an overnight check-in.
What local restrictions should I check?
Check the current rules of Voies navigables de France / Canal de la Marne au Rhin before you choose your stops. Access, anchoring and mooring rules differ by zone, and some zones charge entry fees or close. Follow official maps, signs and local instructions, protect the seabed and shoreline and use waste facilities. An empty spot does not mean you may anchor or moor there.
What published mooring price can I use as a reference?
Port de plaisance de Kembs charges visitors €23/day for a 10 m boat with 4 people (tariff from November 2025). Water, electricity, sanitary facilities and waste collection are included for stays of up to 9 days. Each extra person costs €2/day. Kembs lies in southern Alsace, away from the canal routes from Saverne. Ask how the port measures length and whether tax is included.
What qualifications do I need for bareboat hire?
Bareboat requirements depend on the boat, engine, flag and sailing area. Your licence has to meet the local rules, and the charter company has to accept it. Send your licence and sailing CV to the charter company before you pay, and ask whether you also need a VHF certificate. If your licence or experience falls short, book a skippered charter.
Can a skipper handle the boat for our group?
Ask the charter company whether it can provide a skipper for your boat. Bareboat listings do not include one. Before booking, agree on the fee, working hours, the skipper's berth and meals. If no skipper is available, choose another boat that comes with one.
How should I choose a realistic local itinerary?
Plan a canal route from your base in Saverne or Hesse around current lock hours, bridge clearances and navigation notices. Plan daily stages within the permitted cruising hours and keep a shorter way back in reserve.
