Yacht Charter and Boat Rental in Florida
A yacht charter in Florida begins by choosing one area, not a statewide circuit. Miami and Biscayne Bay, the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, the Keys, the central Gulf Coast, and the Panhandle are separate cruising grounds. Base the route on local depths, bridges, traffic, the forecast, and approved navigation limits.
Florida's inventory favors skippered offers; self-drive and bareboat choices are limited. Match the contract to crew, route, and overnight use. Keep the first outing simple, retain weather and return margin, and get written approval before leaving the agreed area.
Boat Types Available in Florida
Motor yachts
Motor yachts in Florida form the largest active category and commonly include a captain. They suit day trips, events, and overnight plans. Compare guest and sleeping capacity, crew, fuel, gratuity, food, water toys, marina costs, and hours.
Motorboats
Motorboats in Florida suit bays, waterways, and short coastal outings. Self-drive permission is listing-specific. Check shade, fuel, range, passenger limit, navigation boundary, and shallow-water suitability, then confirm every proposed operator.
Catamarans
Catamarans in Florida provide broad deck and living space. Beam, windage, and bridge clearance still affect handling and berths. Shallow draft does not make an unmarked flat, coral area, or seagrass bed safe.
Power catamarans
Power catamarans in Florida combine multihull space with motor cruising. Compare fuel, range, beam, cabins, crew, and sea-state limits. Speed cannot replace a suitable forecast, and day-charter capacity is not the same as overnight capacity.
Boat Rental Prices in Florida
The current public price module displays only a motor-yacht row, so prices for the other three active categories are omitted. Treat it as a snapshot: date, duration, base, capacity, captain, fuel, taxes, and extras change the quote.
Motor yacht charter prices
Motor yacht charter in Florida starts at around 328 € per day. A 13-person motor yacht charter in Florida costs 2,133 € per day in the current example.
Charter Options in Florida
Florida has no general recreational boat license. Unless exempt, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, operating a vessel powered by 10 horsepower or more must carry photo ID and accepted safety proof. This can be a Florida boating safety ID card or 90-day temporary certificate, a valid International Certificate of Competency, or qualifying proof from a US state, territory, or Canada. A livery may rent only human-powered craft to under-18s; operators may be stricter.
For a livery rental, every renter and potential operator must receive pre-rental instruction on controls, right of way, hazards, restrictions, and emergencies. In a valid bareboat charter, the charterer controls the vessel, chooses any captain, or operates it if qualified; a hired captain needs the appropriate US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential. Confirm format, command, route, inclusions, and weather policy in writing.
Carry IDs or passports, contract, registration, insurance, safety proof, and relevant credentials. Locate approved life jackets, distress and fire equipment, navigation lights, shutoffs, and engine cutoff. Confirm VHF and emergency procedures. For a US-flagged recreational vessel, domestic VHF use normally needs no FCC ship-station license or operator permit; a foreign-port voyage requires both.
Charter Bases and Boating Areas in Florida
Miami and Biscayne Bay
Miami yacht charters access Biscayne Bay, the Intracoastal Waterway, and Atlantic water. Start with a local circuit suited to contracted hours. Shallow flats, bridges, PortMiami traffic, speed zones, and Biscayne National Park rules require current charts and a lookout.
Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway
Fort Lauderdale boat rentals suit urban waterways or approved Atlantic outings; Pompano Beach extends the same cluster. Check bridge clearances and schedules, no-wake areas, inlet conditions, and Port Everglades traffic. Never turn a late handover into a rushed offshore leg.
Stock Island, Key West, and the Lower Keys
Stock Island yacht charters and Key West boat rentals provide Lower Keys starts near Hawk Channel and sanctuary waters. Use one Keys base instead of promising a rushed Miami return. Check reef zones, shallow banks, moorings, currents, and berths for each stop.
Sarasota, St. Petersburg, and Tampa Bay
Sarasota yacht charters and St. Petersburg boat rentals cover central Gulf and Tampa Bay plans. Choose nearby bays, barrier islands, or a suitable coastal leg. Verify passes, bridges, tides, marina space, red-tide notices, and afternoon weather.
Destin, Fort Walton Beach, and the Panhandle
Destin boat rentals and Fort Walton Beach charters focus on Choctawhatchee Bay, local waters, or suitable Gulf trips. Inlet flow, shoals, fishing traffic, and changing weather shape the day. Keep an alternative and return before the cutoff.
Cruising routes and the Florida Keys
Boat rental in the Florida Keys and a charter out of Miami cover two different plans. From Biscayne Bay the practical run south goes to Key Largo and Islamorada on the Hawk Channel side, with shallow banks on the bay side that decide the draft you can take. Bareboat charter in Florida is limited compared with the Caribbean, and many boats are offered captained only, so confirm which option applies before you plan a multi-day route. Check the operating area in the contract, and keep the return day free of a long open-water leg.
Practical Boating Information for Florida
Use National Weather Service forecasts and warnings for the correct coast, plus NOAA tides and currents and National Hurricane Center updates. Thunderstorms bring gusts, lightning, waterspouts, and poor visibility. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, but the live forecast and operator's storm instructions determine whether a trip proceeds.
Use current NOAA charts, US Coast Guard Local Notices to Mariners, and the briefing. Florida has shallow banks, channels, busy inlets, bridges, and commercial traffic; the Gulf Stream adds a strong Atlantic current. Make reasonable efforts to stay at least 300 feet from a divers-down marker in open water and 100 feet away in a river, inlet, or channel; use idle speed if closer.
Follow posted speed and exclusion signs; manatee zones vary, and the strictest rule applies. In Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, never anchor on living coral. Use an available sanctuary mooring; otherwise, outside a no-anchor zone, choose clear sand away from coral and seagrass. Biscayne and Dry Tortugas national parks add closures, permits, and anchoring rules.
Secure sewage systems and use pump-outs; the Florida Keys sanctuary prohibits treated and untreated sewage discharge. Retain trash and report a fuel or oil sheen. Nonresident anglers age 16 or older normally need a Florida license even for catch and release unless a licensed charter or exemption covers them. Check species, gear, season, bag, and zone rules. Never feed or chase wildlife.
The Bahamas is a separate international voyage. Proceed only with written permission from the operator and insurer, passports, visas if needed, vessel and radio documents, offshore equipment, Bahamian clearance, and a current cruising permit. Returning masters must report to US Customs and Border Protection immediately and follow CBP ROAM or an officer's instructions. In grave danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Channel 16 or dial 911; retain a return margin.
