Liguria Boat Rental & Yacht Charter
Liguria is a narrow arc of coast wedged between mountains and sea, and nearly everything worth reaching sits within a day of everything else. The fleet runs from Imperia and Alassio on the western Riviera di Ponente through Genoa to Portofino, Lavagna and the Gulf of La Spezia in the east. This is a coast of short hops, deep water close to shore and harbors built for boats long before they were built for tourists.
Rental Bases on the Italian Riviera
The Riviera splits at Genoa. West is Ponente, sunnier and gentler; east is Levante, steeper and more dramatic. Choose the half you want to cruise.
La Spezia, Le Grazie, Fezzano and Bocca di Magra - the eastern gulf and the closest bases to the Cinque Terre and Portovenere. Protected water inside the breakwater, full services and the best launch point for the region's headline coastline.
Lavagna, Chiavari and Portofino - the Tigullio gulf. Lavagna holds one of the Mediterranean's largest marinas, Chiavari sits right beside it, and Portofino is 30 minutes away by water instead of an hour by road.
Genoa, Varazze and Arenzano - the center, with Italy's biggest port, an aquarium and transport links that make crew changes simple.
Imperia, Alassio, Marina di Andora and Santo Stefano al Mare - the western Riviera, closer to France, quieter in August and the natural base for a run to San Remo or across to Corsica.
Which Boat to Rent in Liguria
The fleet is broad and skipper-heavy: roughly 44 motorboats, 31 sailing yachts, 25 motor yachts and 5 catamarans. Of those, 78 need no license and 77 come with a skipper, which fits a coast where slips are tight and local knowledge saves time.
Motorboats form the largest group and make the practical choice for day trips to Portofino or the Cinque Terre, where the goal is to get there, swim and head back.
Sailing yachts suit a week spanning both Rivieras, with a reliable afternoon breeze and harbors every few miles.
Motor yachts are unusually well represented here, reflecting a coast where Portofino and Santa Margherita set the tone.
Catamarans number only five and book out early, since space at anchor counts in the crowded eastern bays.
Itineraries and Anchorages
Portofino and the Tigullio - the harbor is small, expensive and worth seeing from the water. Anchoring is restricted inside the marine protected area around the promontory, so review the zoning before dropping the hook and use the bays at Paraggi or San Fruttuoso instead.
Cinque Terre - Monterosso, Vernazza, Manarola, Corniglia and Riomaggiore line the cliffs east of Portovenere. This is also a protected area with anchoring rules and mooring buoys; the villages offer almost no berthing, so most crews anchor off and go ashore by tender.
Gulf of La Spezia and Portovenere - sheltered in nearly any weather, with Palmaria island at the entrance and the Golfo dei Poeti behind. The fallback when the outer coast is exposed.
Riviera di Ponente - Alassio's bay, Gallinara island off Albenga and the westward run toward San Remo and the French border: easier water, fewer crowds.
Licenses, Skippers and Safety
Among the listings, 51 are available bareboat, 77 include a skipper and 78 need no license at all. In Italy the license requirement depends on engine power and distance from shore, and each listing states which applies.
Liguria's particular hazards are the libeccio, a southwesterly that drives swell straight into the Levante harbors, and a steep-to coast with few natural anchorages between ports. Slips in Portofino, Santa Margherita and the Cinque Terre are limited and reserved far ahead in summer. Genoa ranks among the busiest commercial ports in the Mediterranean: stay clear of the approaches and ferry lanes.
Season and Weather
The season spans May through October. Summer delivers settled weather and an afternoon sea breeze that makes coastal sailing easy, with mornings often calm. The libeccio is the wind to watch, and it can shut the exposed harbors for a day or two at a stretch.
June and September offer the best value: warm water, services running and space in the marinas that simply does not exist in August. Liguria's mild climate keeps some day boats working into fall, but the Cinque Terre and Portofino anchorages remain summer propositions.
Liguria Rental Prices
Rentals in Liguria start around €100 per day, the motorboat average - though the spread is wide, and an eight-person Frilvam Nelson 24 lists near €824. Sailing yachts average about €133 per day, with the most-reserved six-berth boat at roughly €938, a gap showing how much boat you get at the top of this market.
Catamarans run about €295 per day for the most popular twelve-berth Lagoon 42. Motor yachts start near €575 and reach about €1,650 for a fourteen-person Cantiere Navale Santamargherita 23. For a day on the water a license-free motorboat is the cheapest entry; for a full week, the sailing yacht and catamaran numbers are where the real comparison sits.
Reserve Your Liguria Boat Rental with Boataround
Boataround carries motorboats, sailing yachts, motor yachts and catamarans from Imperia, Alassio, Marina di Andora and Santo Stefano al Mare in the west, through Genoa, Varazze and Arenzano, to Lavagna, Chiavari, Portofino, La Spezia, Le Grazie, Fezzano and Bocca di Magra in the east, with complete specs, verified renter reviews and secure checkout. Confirm whether a listing needs a license, add a skipper for the Portofino and Cinque Terre restrictions, and pick the Riviera that matches your week.
