Whether you're an experienced sailor or a first-time charterer, Athens serves as the perfect starting point for an unforgettable journey through the Hellenic Republic.
Gateway to the Aegean Sea and Beyond
Athens is not just the historical heart of Greece but also a prime location for starting your sailing holiday. With easy access from Athens International Airport to marinas like Alimos, Flisvos, and Zea, you're just a few knots away from setting sail on the azure waters of the Aegean Sea. The proximity to the Saronic Gulf and the Cyclades Islands makes Athens an ideal base for novice sailors and seasoned mariners.
A Fleet for Every Preference

From bareboat charters for those who wish to captain their own vessel, to fully crewed luxury yachts that promise ultimate relaxation, there's a perfect boat for every group size and budget.

Planning Your Athens Yacht Charter
Best Time to Charter
The sailing season in Athens mirrors that of the broader Greek region, with May to October offering the best sailing conditions. The summer months, while popular, bring about the Meltemi winds, offering exhilarating sailing conditions for the adventurous. For those seeking solace and milder winds, late spring and early autumn are ideal, providing the perfect balance of warm weather and serene seas.
Must-Visit Destinations
- Cyclades Islands: Embark on an island-hopping adventure to famous destinations like Mykonos and Santorini, as well as lesser-known gems, each offering unique landscapes, ancient history, and vibrant culture.
- Saronic Gulf: A sailing trip to the Saronic Gulf reveals the charming islands of Aegina, Poros, and Hydra, each with its own allure, from historic temples to narrow winding streets and breathtaking views.
- Ionian Sea: Although a bit further from Athens, the Ionian Islands are worth the journey for those interested in lush landscapes, pristine beaches, and Venetian architecture.
Insider Tips
- Marina Selection: Choosing the right marina to start your journey is crucial. Alimos Marina, one of the largest in Greece, provides numerous amenities and is a popular choice for many charters.
- Cultural Exploration: Make time to explore Athens itself, from the ancient Acropolis and the vibrant Plaka neighborhood to the National Archaeological Museum, before or after your sailing trip.
- Local Delicacies: Greek cuisine is a highlight of any yacht charter. Ensure to try local delicacies like Greek salad, fresh seafood, and, of course, a glass of ouzo.

FAQs
What is the best time of year for a yacht charter in Athens?
The sailing season in Athens typically runs from April to October. The most stable weather conditions are between May and September, with July and August being the warmest and busiest months. For more comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds, many sailors prefer May–June or September–October.
Which sailing areas near Athens are most suitable for beginners?
The Saronic Gulf, just southwest of Athens, is a popular choice for less experienced sailors. This area offers relatively calm seas, short distances between islands like Aegina, Poros, and Hydra, and reliable winds, making it a beginner-friendly zone for week-long sailing routes.
What type of boat should I choose for a charter in Athens?
The best boat type depends on your group size and sailing plans. Sailing yachts are a common choice for island-hopping, while catamarans offer more space and stability, ideal for families or larger groups. For those with limited sailing experience, a skippered yacht can be a practical solution.
Do I need a licence to rent a boat in Athens?
To rent a bareboat yacht in Athens, at least one person on board must hold a valid sailing licence recognized by Greek authorities. A second crew member with basic sailing experience is often required. If no one in your group is licensed, you can charter a boat with a skipper.
How do I reach the main charter bases in Athens?
Most charter boats in Athens depart from marinas such as Alimos Marina, Kalamaki, or Lavrion. Alimos Marina is about 45 minutes by taxi or public transport from Athens International Airport (ATH). Lavrion is located closer to the airport and is often used for trips toward the Cyclades.
How much are mooring and marina fees around Athens?
Mooring fees vary by location and boat size. In Athens, a night at a marina typically costs between €30 and €100, depending on the vessel. Many islands in the Saronic Gulf charge minimal port fees, usually ranging from €10 to €30 per night. Some bays allow anchoring for free, though facilities are limited.
What are the typical sailing routes from Athens?
Common itineraries include a week-long loop through the Saronic Islands, visiting places like Aegina, Poros, Hydra, and Spetses. For experienced crews, the Cyclades (e.g., Kea, Kythnos, Syros) are accessible from Lavrion, though stronger winds (Meltemi) can be a challenge in high summer.
Can I rent a boat in Athens for just a day?
Yes, day charters are available in Athens, especially for motorboats and smaller sailboats. These are suitable for coastal trips, swimming stops, or introductory sailing experiences in the Saronic Gulf.
